Skiing Golliwog

The name `Golliwog' first appeared in a children's storybook, `The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls' in 1895. Florence Upton painted the pictures which were inspired by her black doll and two wooden Dutch dolls. Bertha Upton, her mother, provided the words.

Children were immediately enchanted with Golliwog, or Golly for short, perhaps because of his funny and inimitable oddity that distinguished him from other dolls - an incredibly black doll with jet-black woolly hair and big contrasting white eyes.

In the stories, Golliwog, with his two friends, the Dutch Dolls, went around the world and exotic places for adventure. Golliwog was portrayed as a gallant and kind character that helped those in need.
